GROTHER WINS BATTLE AS MCBRIDE WINS WAR

Newcastle's Hayden McBride has claimed the 2009 Australian CIK Karting Championship after finishing runner-up at the final round held in Queensland over the weekend.

Originally scheduled to be contested at the Ipswich circuit, the final day of competition was moved to the nearby Toowoomba circuit after track conditions were deemed unsafe on Saturday afternoon.

The surface began breaking up in the hot conditions this morning and racing was called to a halt early in the afternoon. After inspecting the track and considering all options, AKA officials consulted competitors and decided to move the remaining heat races, pre-final and final to Toowoomba.

Throughout Sunday's action McBride battled with tyre issues, believed to have been instigated by the condition of the Ipswich circuit on Saturday, and finished well off the pace during the heat races.

Luckily for McBride he was able to take advantage of the second set of allocated tyres and showed some strong pace to finish runner-up to his Gillard team-mate John Grother in both finals.

"It is a big relief to get through and win the championship," said McBride.

"My tyres were pretty much worn out after qualifying and the opening heat, I think due to the Ipswich track surface torturing them. I've never seen a track like we saw yesterday."

During the finals McBride was engaged in a hard fought battle with fellow championship contenders Tyson Pearce and Simon Roberts along with CIK debutant Matthew Waters while Grother cleared off into the distance.

"All year myself, Tyson and Robbo have had some great battles and this weekend was no different," said McBride.

"At the end of last year I had almost the decision to retire from the sport but this year's CIK Championship has certainly rejuvenated my enthusiasm for the sport and I'm already looking forward to next year.

"Special thanks must go to Paul Gallo and Kristian Hanley of Gillard Karts along with my mechanic Dave Keary. Without the assistance of these guys and the team at RJ doors, this year would have been possible."

McBride finished the four round championship on 249 points, 16 clear of Pearce in the runner-up spot.

Pearce's championship chase was all but over when he encountered an engine issue in the second heat race. The Omega pilot would eventually five points clear of Roberts in the standings.

The 2010 Australian CIK Championship, which will include the KF2, KZ2 (formerly Intercontinental C) and the KF3 (formerly Junior Intercontinental A) will begin in Newcastle on March 5-7, 2010.

CHANGE OF VENUE FOR FINAL DAY OF CIK CHAMPIONSHIP

The final round in the 2009 CIK Australian Karting Championship will be moved from the Ipswich Kart Track to the Greer Park Raceway in nearby Toowoomba tomorrow, after officials deemed the racing surface at Ipswich unsafe for racing this afternoon.

The surface began breaking up in the hot conditions this morning and racing was called to a halt early this afternoon. After inspecting the track and considering all options, AKA officials consulted competitors and have decided to move the remaining heat races, pre-final and final will be held in Toowoomba.

Competitor safety was the key driver of the decision, options to ‘patch' the circuit and continue racing were considered, however dismissed on the grounds of safety.

The Ipswich Kart Club did everything in its power to rescue the event, however a suitable solution could not be found to allow the event to continue on safely.

"It is the first time in known history of the AKA that a race meeting has been transferred like this," said Clerk of Course Chris Robinson.

"It is a very unfortunate situation but I think we have made the right decision and would sincerely like to thank everyone who has moved ‘heaven and earth' to ensure this event continues.

"While everyone has done everything possible to make it happen a huge thanks must go to the National Executive of the AKA and AKA QLD officials, along with Toowoomba for making their track available at such short notice.

"I'm also pleased to know that we will have every single official from today in attendance and 95 percent of the drivers have confirmed they will be there tomorrow."

An amended program, including extended practice for all competitors will begin at 8am at Toowoomba Kart Raceway.

The Greer Park Raceway is located just off the Lockyer Highway, Toowoomba just past Helidon (heading toward Toowoomba from Brisbane)

Prior to the racing being suspended today, Queenslander John Grother set the pace during qualifying ahead of Gillard team-mate, and championship leader, Hayden McBride, CIK debutant Matthew Waters and South Australian Tyson Pearce. He also took out the first heat race.

CIK CHAMPIONSHIP SET TO GO DOWN TO THE WIRE IN IPSWICH THIS WEEKEND

Three of Australia's most decorated karting stars will be vying for the 2009 Australian CIK Karting Championship crown in Ipswich, Queensland this weekend.

Newcastle duo Hayden McBride and Simon Roberts and Adelaide veteran Tyson Pearce are all going flat-out to bring home the premier title in Australian karting in the fourth and final event of this season.

McBride holds a slender lead entering this weekend's event over Pearce, however, the Gillard pilot doesn't feel any extra pressure as he heads to the most northern event on the schedule.

But a swag of wildcard entries could spoil the party for the championship challengers as they come into the fray for the championship finale.

Toowoomba flyer Brendan Nelson, Sydney's Jason Varley and Matthew Waters along Victorian James Mills will all be making their CIK debut at this weekend's event.

"While it is good to be holding the lead entering this weekend's final round, I won't be changing anything but more so triple checking things to make sure everything goes smoothly," said McBride.

"I've been to Ipswich a few times, and really enjoy racing up there - it's a great track. It has been resurfaced since I last raced there, so that is something that we will need to get on top of early in the weekend.

"It has been great to see the CIK Series grow over the year, especially with the new guys coming to the final round. I think that next year the series will continue to grow and really look forward to being a part of it."

VARLEY SIGNS UP FOR CIK FINALE

Dual Australian Champion Jason Varley is the latest top line driver who will suit up for the final round of the 2009 Australian CIK Championship to be held at Queensland's Ipswich Kart Raceway next weekend (October 23-25).

While he starting his karting career over 15 years ago, next weekend's event will be the first time that Varley has raced in the prestigious CIK Championship.

"I've always looked considered the CIK Championships as the upper echelon of the sport and aspired to compete in it but a lack of funds has generally got in the way," said Varley.

"Now with everyone using a control engine and tyres, it is a very cost effective way to experience the top level of kart racing in Australia.

"I'm pretty pumped to see how much power the engines have got and looking forward to driving on the sticky tyres, I've never really raced on anything like an open compound tyre before.

"The last time I raced at Ipswich in a sprint kart event was over five years ago when I was competing in the Ford KartStars Series. I didn't really have that good of a run, hopefully this luck won't continue next weekend."

Varley will be using the final round of the 2009 Championship to assist him to prepare for his schedule throughout next year.

"By racing in the final round of this year it will give me a good opportunity to get a head start if I can find the right backing to do the entire series in 2010," said Varley.

"I'd really like to compete in the entire series next year providing I can get a budget together."

The Australian CIK Championship has been the springboard for many of Australia's modern day motorsport stars including Jamie Whincup, Mark Winterbottom, Ryan Briscoe, Michael Caruso and Tim Slade in the 13 Series' held between 1993 and 2005.

During their karting careers Whincup and Winterbottom would regularly go head-to-head in the Australian CIK Championship - a rivalry that has continued into the V8 Supercar Championship as their careers have progressed over the years.

Whincup won an Australian CIK Championship in both 1998 and 1999 while Winterbottom secured the top crown during 2001.

This rejuvenated Championship has all drivers using the IAME Parilla KF2 (formerly Intercontinental A) specification engine, that produces an impressive 40hp, on the chassis.

With one round remaining in the 2009 Championship Hayden McBride holds a slender lead over South Australian Tyson Pearce on the points standings.

Courtesy of Defence Industries, manufacturers of high quality security roller shutters, and St George Kart Centre there will be no less than $6,500 cash and prizes to be split among the competitors at the final round

TOOWOOMBA FLYER SET FOR FINAL ROUND OF CIK CHAMPIONSHIP

Toowoomba's Brendan Nelson is the latest in a growing list of top line drivers to confirm his entry for the final round of the 2009 Australian CIK Championship scheduled for October 24/25 in Ipswich, Queensland.

Nelson, a five-time State Karting Champion, will be making his debut in Australia's most prestigious karting series alongside the likes of Championship contenders Hayden McBride, Tyson Pearce and Simon Roberts.

"The CIK Championship is just about the only class in Australian karting that I haven't raced and the fact that you compete with faster engines, stickier tyres and a great format of racing is really attractive," said Nelson, who will compete under the Doyle's Kartsport banner at the event.

"By doing the final round of this year's Championship it should put me in a good position to be extremely competitive in next year's Series."

The 17 year-old, who is currently combining his racing with first year studies in a Bachelor in Business and Sports Management degree at Griffith University, has enjoyed mixed success at the Ipswich circuit throughout his six year karting career.

"Ipswich is a track that I've had a few wins here and there but have never seemed to be able to get it all together when it matters most in the major events - hopefully this will change next month," said Nelson.

DUAL NATIONAL CHAMP AND VICTORIAN STAR SET FOR FINAL ROUND OF CIK CHAMPIONSHIP

Dual National Champion Matthew Waters and Victorian James Mills are the latest two drivers to confirm they will be lining up for the final round of the 2009 Australian CIK Championship at Ipswich, Queensland next month (October 24/25).

For Waters, who completed the rare feat of securing both the Senior National Light and Heavy Australian Championships at the one event last year, competing in the CIK Championship will be the next step in his flourishing career which started over 12 years ago.

"The CIK Championship has always been the pinnacle of Australian karting in my eyes and it is now even more economically feasible it is more attractive than ever," said 19 year-old Waters.

"I'm really looking forward to getting on track alongside some of the more recognisable names to test myself against the best in the business.

"I've raced the National classes for a number or years and more recently stepped into the Clubman classes, now I'm looking forward to continuing my enjoyment of the sport while running around with the top guys in the sport."

The Sydney-sider will be joined at Ipswich by fellow CIK debutant James Mills.

Mills returned to the sport last year following a three year break and is more enthused than every about tackling the best drivers in the country.

"When I was a junior the drivers in the CIK Championship were the ones that I always looked up to and I loved the style of racing," said Mills.

"The rejuvenated CIK Series is something that really excites me and I'm really looking forward to getting on track next month at Ipswich."

Next month's event will be used by Mills as a warm-up for an all out assault on the 2010 Championship where he will pair up with his brother Matthew in a two-kart line up for the First Kart Australia team.

Entering the final round of the Championship Newcastle's Hayden McBride holds a slender five-point buffer over former ICC Champion Tyson Pearce in the Championship Standings. Simon Roberts is still within striking distance in third place with Damian Radosevic in fourth place.

GROTHER RETURNS TO CIK CHAMPIONSHIP IN WINNING STYLE

Queensland's John Grother has signalled his return to the top level of Australian karting with an emphatic victory at round three of the 2009 Australian CIK Championship, at Raleigh International Raceway in New South Wales across the weekend.

The CIK Championship, which had been absent from Australian circuits for almost five years until earlier this year, uses similar engines and tyres to the ones used in the World and European Karting Championships.

Grother was the dominant driver all throughout the weekend by qualifying on pole position, taking the win in all three heat races and dominating both finals yesterday to claim the victory ahead of Gillard team-mate Hayden McBride.

Such was the pace shown by Grother that his qualifying lap of 44.221 seconds was one of the fastest times ever recorded around the famous 1050-metre circuit which has hosted a number of International events over the years.

"It's good to be home," said Grother, who was making his first start in the rejuvenated CIK Championship.

"The CIK style of racing is what karting is all about for me. It's got the speed, it's got the grippier tyres and the long races - it's just great.

"I only had limited time in the kart prior to the weekend, so to get the win in my return to the CIK Championship is an amazing result. I can't thank Paul Gallo and Kristian Hanley from Gillard Karts enough for their support.

"This weekend has really enthused me for the next round at Ipswich and next year when I plan on doing the entire Series to chase the Championship."

A pair of second places in the finals was enough for McBride to snare the Championship lead back from South Australian Tyson Pearce, who recorded a third and a fourth placing in the two finals.

New Zealander Mitch Cunningham was among the podium runners for the majority of the weekend before claiming third spot in the opening final.
